Einstein's Story

by Jessica Frame (copyright 2008)

Einstein was my grey pearl cockatiel.  He was six months old.  Suddenly one day a lump appeared on his chest.  We watched it closely but it did not look to be an injury.  He seemed to be eating but had lost weight when I weighed him.  I noticed he became less vocal and was quite sleepy.  The lump was firm to touch and the skin over the lump was normal colour but started to turn a bluish-purple colour and as days went on it turned a yellowish colour.  I spent time on the internet researching but I could not find any similar symptoms.  A week after the lump developed he gained a little weight, was more vocal, brighter and certainly more active than he had been.  I thought he had improved and perhaps was getting better.  It then made it more of a shock when the next morning I found him dead in his cage.  My Dad and I just put it down to being a growth/tumour as he was not seen by an avian vet.

R.I.P.  EINSTEIN

Note:  Cockatiels, as with many species of birds, mask their symptoms when ill and by the time owners recognise that something is not right with their pet it is generally too late.  If you notice any slight change in behaviour or growths like Einstein, please seek the advice of an avian veterinarian immediately - it may just save your pets life!!
